The City and County of Denver collects over 256,000 tons of trash at Denver homes each year. That's an average of 1.6 tons per household a year. Denver uses an integrated collection strategy to recycle or dispose of waste in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Each week Denver Solid Waste Management crews make their rounds collecting trash and recycling from curbsides and alleyways. At other scheduled times Solid Waste Management collects large items such as unwanted furniture and extra trash. Appliances and Household Hazardous Waste materials are collected by appointment by vendors contracted by Solid Waste Management.
Denver Solid Waste Management, a program of the City & County of Denver Public Works Department, is only authorized to provide services to residential homes of seven or fewer units and our own municipal facilites. Denver Solid Waste Management is not authorized to provide services to commercial properties such as businesses and apartment communities.
As Solid Waste Management continues to expand cart-based trash service to Denver neighborhoods, it’s a good time to start thinking about what trash cart size best fits your home. Solid Waste Management now offers three different trash cart sizes:
Maximizing recycling opportunities offered through the Denver Recycles program can help make a smaller trash cart possible. Residents that are not already participating in the recycling program are encouraged to take advantage of this service.
Existing recyclers are encouraged to maximize their recycling efforts by making sure they are capturing all the recyclables they can. Recyclers with the original 65-gallon recycle cart can either upsize to a 95-gallon cart if more capacity is needed, or request a second recycling cart.
Many household don’t need the largest cart size and we encourage residents to right-size their carts by requesting smaller trash carts. Residents can request a different sized cart by calling 311 (720-913-1311).
